Our Story ?

CEDO Uganda though the years and our advocacy story.
By 1991, CEDO-Uganda’s founder, Mr Abdallah Byabasaija, had spent his youthful years working with communities struggling to cope with the devastating effects of the 1980-1986 civil war that had ravaged the country. Children in particular had been adversely affected, and the United Nations estimated that over 500,000 Ugandans had lost their lives over the five years of war.
Despite an initial outpouring of donor funding for relief in war-affected communities, very little of this support was reaching communities and families shouldering the burden and costs of caring for orphaned children and other destitute especially in rural villages in Masindi. And yet, passionate, committed local groups and individuals—often operating in isolation with extremely limited resources—remained determined to find innovative ways to promote the rights of the hurting; providing food, shelter,  healthcare, education, and other support to these vulnerable populations especially the children.
Inspired by these efforts, and the desire to contribute to the rehabilitation of fellow young people (mostly orphans) who had been affected by the war and could no longer afford school fees in his community of Kijura South in Masindi, Mr Abdallah Byabasaija resigned his job with Uganda Red Cross Society and worked closely with other youths who shared his vision, founding CEDO-Uganda on 17th November 1992, as a way to bolster existing efforts in rehabilitation of the war ravaged community, and create hope for hurting.

CEDO-Uganda worked diligently, facilitating out-of-school young people, who were economically disadvantaged, to rekindle their self-esteem and confidence and, promoting their rights through innovative cultural activities, entertainment and life skills. Today, CEDO-Uganda works in 13 Districts of Western, Northern and Central Uganda, partnering with Civil Society Organizations, Private Sector Associations, Health Centres, Public Schools, the Judiciary, and Local Governments in Wakiso, Masindi, Jinja, Sheema, Kyegegwa, Kikuube, Sembabule, Nwoya, Hoima, Nakaseke, Kiryandongo, Rukungiri and Buliisa; and parts of Kampala (Kawempe Division); with the humble support of individual as well as local and international donors.

Our Mission 

 

CEDO’s mission is to promote the rights of children to a healthy, secure and value adding childhood. This is to be achieved by empowering communities to improve the quality of their lives thereby enabling them build a sustainable community with improved standards of living.

CEDO-Uganda’s strategic goal for the period 2015-2019 is: “The realization of Sustainable and Secure Livelihoods Among poor Children and their Families, and Achievement of Positive Changes In their Overall Position and Condition”.  

Underlying the above overall goal is the recognition that sustainable improvements in the quality of life of marginalized children and their families crucially depend upon their empowerment to assert claims and act collectively for the progressive realization of their rights.  CEDO-Uganda also does recognize that, Orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) do best when they are supported and cared for in their own communities, among extended families, friends, and neighbors. To increased capability of the caregiver to provide for the OVC, CEDO-Uganda harnesses the talents, creativity, and commitment of communities to sustainably care for their children and build local resources; developing home grown scalable models that can be replicated elsewhere.
